WHY SHOULD I PAY THAT MUCH FOR MY
PUPPY!?
Raising dogs cost money. Basically dogs are like our employees with their careers being
breeding and having babies. The happier your employees are the better the results.
What does all this mean. SPENDING MONEY!
Dogs need good dog food. Everyone knows how important diet is and our breeding dogs
need good food. I have seen puppies whose Moms were raised on bargain puppy food.
The puppies were either unhealthy fat or unhealthy thin. Their coats lacked shine and
softness. The eyes lacked sparkle. The personalities lacked spunk. A good dry dog food is
going to cost  $1.00 a pound or more. Then theres the can food most breeders feed the
puppies. Were talking more money there. This is only the beginning.
Here is a list of a few of the things needed to breed puppies
Immunizations, vitamins, kennels, blankets, laundry soap, dissinfectants, bleach,
medicines, c sections, prenatal care, postnatal care, health certificates, registration
papers, puppy pens, dog brushes, dog shampoo, nail clippers, dog tags, dog toys, record
keeping, advertisements, chew treats, dog sitters, tail cropping (breed specific) groomers,
helpers, scales, birthing supplies, educational books and videos,  not to mention gas and
time.
By the time a litter of puppies is born you can have $150. or more invested into each
puppy depending on the size of the litter and the circumstances of the birth. That is if you
have properly cared for the parents dogs. Many chose to improperly care for their dogs
and take the risks of losing puppies. I guess there is more profit to be made this way and I
guess that would be O.K. if you can watch puppies die. A lot of poor puppy breeders lose
one puppy or more from each litter. This is from lack of proper food or improper veterinary
(or even animal husbandry) care or all these things.
Also dog breeding done right is hard work. Floors must be kept clean and cleaned once or
twice a day. Puppies need clean pens to grow up in. Then theres the constant baths and
nail clipping that can be a challenge . Theres the mental needs of our dogs that need
addressed. Happy dogs are healthier. So playtime is all part of the job (the best part) Then
theres the long hours we must sit with our birthing moms making sure our purebred dogs
deliver healthy puppies safely as possible. We wont even get into the stress part. Not only
do we love our dogs but the buiseness part also is hurt when one of our animals is sick.
Double wammy! There are a lot of sleepless nights in there. I think if we were to pay
ourselves for our time we would maybe get 50 cents an hour by the time the puppy is sold.
All the breeders I know go out after each litter is sold and stock up on all the supplies we
will need for the next few months. We hit the stores and the internet like madwomen. By
the time we are done restocking there is little money left over.
I know there are breeders out there who do not spend the money or take the time to do
things right. There is the obvious puppy mills. But even smaller breeding fascilities who
take short cuts in spending when breeding their dogs may be able to sell you a dog for
200-300 dollars and still make money. These breeders make more money then those of us
who ask a fair price. By the time their litters are born the amount of money into each puppy
is minimal. It may seem strange to you but its the bargain puppy seller who is in it for the
money alone. They sell them at a bargain because they don't give their parent dogs or the
puppies the care they need to be well adjusted and healthy.  But you the consumer will
pay in the long run.
The person who keeps the dog (their property) safely (and unhappily) confined to a cage
all day and feeds them nothing but store brand dog food, never gives them vitamins' rarely
cleans the cage, doesn't socialize the puppy, doesn't take the time to wean the puppy,
saves big money and can sell you a bargain puppy. Basically they harvest the puppy by
pulling it off the moms at 7-8 weeks and getting the health certificate that the puppy barely
passes, advertises in cheap or free advertisement papers "bargain price" puppies to
anyone who will give them the money. Little money and less time was spent on the care of
the dogs and puppies.
Why should you care? I can't give anyone conscience. I have enough to do dealing with
my own. But every time you give money to someone like this you are encouraging the
abuse of dogs. Recently I adopted a dog, Mocha, who came from a place like this. She will
never be what she was meant to be.  She is lucky. She will be here forever as I know she
will never be able to be a normal pet.  But to many of these dogs end up dead after they
are used up or die when their uterus gives out during labor from over breeding and poor
nutrition. To many of the males, after faithfully serving their masters for many years, are
simply taken in the woods and shot by this person they have loved so much, their owners.
Even when a dog is mistreated, they still love their owners. I don't know why anyone would
want to give money to someone who could take their dog out to a remote place and watch
it wags its tail and still pull the trigger.
Sometimes people simply have one female they bred and are just selling the litter this one
time or they breed this one female occasionally. These puppies are often a bargain. I am
not talking about this person. If you can find one of these type of breeders and buy one of
their dogs, you are lucky. I am talking about breeders who have a lot of dogs. People who
are in it for the money alone. People who read the scriptures in the Bible to have in
subjection the animals and think that gives them the right to do what they want with them.
They ignore the scriptures that say not one of these creatures fall without God taking
notice.
You may think I am over dramatizing. Just open your eyes and look around. Its in the
newspaper its on T.V. I am sad to say Ive seen it with my own eyes in my lifetime. Images I
will not ever be able to erase from my memory. I know its true.
I can not give money to people like this. Its up to you what you want to do. But even if you
are just looking out for your own interests, the puppy you buy from people like this is not
going to be as healthy as one you buy from a responsible breeder. The personality will not
be as good. The intelligence will always lack something. I certainly don't want anyone to
overpay for a puppy. But usually that is better then getting a bargain puppy. Very likely in
the end, that puppy will not be a bargain at all.  So for the good of dogs and for your own
good, be willing to spend some money. Visit your puppy before you buy. The best puppy is
going to come from a home breeder, where parent dogs and puppies get individual
attention and the breeder is willing to spend money on their dogs food and care. Don't be
afraid to ask what kind of food they feed their dogs. If they say some store brand, politely
leave. It may be to your advantage to look around to see what food they are feeding their
dogs. What vet do they take their dogs to? Make sure your willing to spend some money,
but also make sure your getting your moneys worth. There are a lot of excellent breeders
out there but there are a few giving the rest of us a bad reputation.

We all want to make some money. But our dogs mean more to most of us then just the
extra income it provides. For me my love for my dogs keeps me going. I push myself harder
because I have my dogs to take care of. I am happier because I have my dogs. I could
never repay back to them what they have given me. They have not replaced my children
as a couple of my children think now that they are all grown. I am sure they think I have
totally lost my mind having so many dogs. No I loved dogs way before any of my children
were born. Now that they are all grown, I have just gone back to caring for the animal I
have always loved. Now that I do not need to put a childs needs ahead of my pets, I can
have my most loved pet with clear conscience.
